AstraZeneca has increased its list of over-the-counter drugs for a possible generic competitor to AstraZeneca in the US by 50%, from $4.9 billion in 2012 to $4.4 billion in 2014.
AstraZeneca said on Friday that it is launching a generic version of Pfizer’s blockbuster cholesterol drug Crestor, which is now available in the US as the AstraZeneca brand name.
The generic competitor to Crestor, called Nexium, was launched in the US in May, when AstraZeneca acquired Wyeth in the US. It’s currently available by prescription only.
Pfizer and AstraZeneca both have patent-protected rights to Nexium, with the patent protecting it from competition until 2023.
The drug is the first generic drug to win approval in the US to compete with AstraZeneca’s branded Crestor, which had U. S. sales of $2.1 billion in 2012.
The new drug competition in the US has been the subject of intense lobbying from drug makers and health plans that are concerned about the impact of generic competition on patients and the health of the elderly.
AstraZeneca said that the generic drug Nexium had U. sales of $2.9 billion in 2012, compared with $3.9 billion in 2011.
“The availability of generic competition means that patients can benefit from the increased number of patients who can benefit from this drug,” AstraZeneca’s chief executive officer, David Brennan, said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring that generics continue to be a key part of the company’s portfolio of new products.”
AstraZeneca is the fourth largest pharmacy company in the US after Pfizer, maker of cholesterol medication Lipitor and Schering-Plough, and Merck. It is the second-largest pharmacy company after Pharmacia and Aventis.

The pharmaceutical company said it was “pleased” with the news and will continue to market its own generic drugs.
“While the number of prescriptions and generic versions of drugs will continue to increase, we are well-positioned to continue to expand our portfolio of new products and continue to support our customers by providing them with access to affordable prescription medications,” AstraZeneca said in a statement. “We believe we are in a position to ensure our brand-name products continue to receive the same high-quality, effective treatments as their generic counterparts.”
AstraZeneca will be marketing Nexium in the US by prescription only in May.
“We are committed to providing affordable access to treatment to patients and the elderly,” said AstraZeneca’s chairman and chief executive officer, Jean-Pierre Garnier, in a statement. “This is a critical step in bringing patients to a new treatment that meets their needs.”
“As we continue to expand our product portfolio and the availability of new product options, we will continue to make the necessary investments to support our members by working with the industry to develop and bring to market the most effective and cost-effective alternatives to Nexium,” the company said.
